Enclosure 44

122

Bradford, September 25, 1914.

X

On the other hand we wish you to know that owing to the un- fortunate war we have got into an intolerable position. To begin with Mr. Bume at the outbreak of the war had ready cash securities or on account current about £54,000. At that time it could not have been foreseen that there would be war between England and Germany. Since war however was declared it was impossible and it is impossible to-day to get into communication with Mr. Bume. Moreover as you know it is treason to remit, and this no doubt will also be the case on the other side.

To confound our difficulties the exchange in Japan broke dei down immediately so that since the outbreak we have not received a single penny from Japan. In India the financial position is totally deranged and for a long time we were unable to negotiate any of our shipments not until it was made lawful by the King's Proclamation to deal with a fim like ours where one of the nart-

the ners in British and the other belongs to an alien enemy.- Banks were not allowed to negotiate and transact any business with u3. This embargo however has been lifted and we are now able

at least also with China to negotiate our shipments with India because we are drawing on Messrs. Gibb, Livingston & Co.

-

Writer has seen the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporatio only last week and although we negotiate through them for India and China they refuse to do busibens for Rongkong because as Mr. Jones tells us - Our firm there is registered as an Austrian firm.

We were not aware This as we said to Mr. Jones was new to us. that we ever have been registered and certainly not as an Austrian firm. Our firm is British - Has been established here in 1894 and writer himself is a British subject.

You are asking us to send you some official document from which this can be gleaned, and in consequence we at once prepared & new Power of Attomey for you in which it is expressly stated that Mr. Reif is a British subject. - is зole proprietor of the business of Bume & Reif whether in Bradford or wherever Buné & Reif has Brancheg, and that the firm is a British firm.

Te wish you to present this new Power of Attorney to the Rank or to anyone it may concern, and we advise you to endeavour to get a charter or licence to transact business for us, but whether you succeed in this or not this Power of Attorney will suffice to prove the nationality of our firm.
